USS KEARSARGE, At Sea (NNS) -- Amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) named its 2007 Senior Sailor of the Year
(SOY) Jan. 14.
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Dainyon Greene, leading petty officer of S-2 division aboard Kearsarge, received word of his
accomplishment during an all hands call on the ship's flight deck.
Capt. James Gregorski, commanding officer, Kearsarge, made the announcement of Greene's selection.
"I was excited when I found out that I was selected for Senior Sailor of the Year," said Greene. "I'm happy to see that hard work pays
off."
For more than a year and a half, Greene has been the leading petty officer of S-2 division, leading more than 100 culinary
specialists and food service attendants in the receipt, stowage and issue of all food supplies, as well as the preparation of more
than 7,500 meals per day.
"Greene is the number one man on the deckplates," said Senior Chief Culinary Specialist (SW) Gregory Foster, leading chief petty
officer of S-2 division. "I'm very fortunate to serve with him. He is the guiding light of food service and Supply Department."
Greene also led Supply Department through 14 underway replenishments, onloading more than 2,000 pallets of provisions, greatly
enhancing the welfare and morale of more than 2,600 Sailors and Marines.
"Greene's contributions to 'Mighty Kearsarge' are immeasurable," said Gregorski. "He has guided his division to exemplary results
while taking personal interest in subordinates' qualifications and advancements. His inspirational enthusiasm and dynamic
leadership has been a key to the Supply Department's continuous success on board Kearsarge."
In addition to his duties, Greene is a mentor to his division in food service operations. Under his leadership, his division has
maintained a 96 percent retention rate, 11 promotions, 12 reenlistments and 15 Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted
Aviation Warfare Specialist qualifications.
"One of the things I say to Sailors in my division, or any other Sailor that asks for advice is to stay involved in the command," said
Greene. "Any time the opportunity to take charge arises, that is the opportunity to demonstrate your leadership potential."
A native of West Middlesex, Pa., Greene graduated from West Middlesex High School on June 1, 1989, before enlisting in the Navy
July 24, 1989, out of Pittsburgh, Pa.
"I'm from a small town in Pennsylvania," said Green. "I wanted to join the Navy so I could see the world."
In his spare time, Greene enjoys watching sports on television and going to the gym to maintain physical fitness. His future goals
include a promotion to chief petty officer.
The SOY program was established by the Chief of Naval Operations to recognize one Sailor who is the best representative of the
ever-growing group of dedicated professionals who serve as role models of professionalism and personal dedication.
