EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Culinary Specialists from Naval Station (NAVSTA) Everett took time out of their busy schedules March 23
to prepare meals and serve the homeless at the Everett Gospel Mission.
Culinary Specialist 2nd class (SW) Robert Smith assigned to Everett’s All American restaurant has dedicated every other Friday to
help feed 100-150 homeless men and women who reside here.
“It feels good to come down and help out people that are less fortunate,” said Smith. “I have been doing this since we started a year
ago, and I have been enjoying it every since.”
This time, Sailors prepared spaghetti and meat sauce, grilled sausage and peppers, garlic bread as well as pasta and chef’s salads.
Lt. Elbert Pama, supply officer for NAVSTA Everett said the Sailor’s were all proud to have been a part of the effor to feed these
people.
“This is a way for our Sailor’s to go and support the community,” Pama said. “There were five volunteers that came out to support
the mission and give back to the community.”
First-time volunteer at the facility Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Kevin Miller said, “I never did anything like this and thought it would
be a great opportunity to help out and meet people.”
Smith said that all food is donated by the local food bank and that it is often a challenge to decide what to prepare for the meal.
“The meal depends on what is available for us to work with and the weather that day,” said Smith. “The coordinators at the shelter
give us free reign as to what to prepare.”
