EVERETT, Wash (NNS) -- Naval Station Everett’s liberty program offered cooking lessons Jan. 23 as part of their single Sailors
program to Sailors interested in the art of making sushi rolls.

The event was held at the base commons, where Sailors watched as Than Myin Oo, a local sushi chef, shared his secrets of how to
make delicious sushi rolls, and then gave those interested a chance to create their own to enjoy.

“I get satisfaction from seeing them make a great sushi roll,” said Myin Oo. “I hope they will be able to share the recipes they have
learned today with others.”

“Sushi Night was a success,” said Julie Hollatz, recreation assistant for Liberty Programs. “The Sailors enjoyed themselves and were
able to interact with each other.”

Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class Billie Grant, assigned to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), said he thought it would just be free food
and was happy to find out he was going to learn how to make it himself.

“I enjoy eating California rolls,” said Grant. “I thought it would be neat to learn how to make them. I was pleasantly surprised to see
some of my friends here, but I am also having a good time meeting some new people.”

Yeoman Seaman Joseph Cottrofeld, currently attending Lincoln’s Indoctrination Course, said he heard about the event during a
class and decided he would come see what the base had to offer.

“The information he gave us is great,” said Cottrofeld. “I didn’t know he would be going into an in-depth discussion on how to make
it, but I am glad to be learning so much about making sushi.”

While some of the class participants were in the class to enjoy the food and receive tips, one Sailor said he decided to participate
because of his interest in learning about different types of ethnic foods and the culture associated with it.

“I enjoy learning about different cultures and particularly look forward to learning about their foods,” said Information Technician
Seaman Brad Peterson. “Now I have learned something I can share with my family and friends.”
